The
Ian Adam "Singing for Breathing" Fund
at
Royal Brompton Hospital
Ian
Adam was a celebrated singing coach to the stars. He believed everyone could sing
and demonstrated this in his successful television series: I'd Like to Teach the
World to Sing. Ian Adam was a patient at Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Trust
for many years until his death in May 2007. Singer, Peter French initiated the
concept of a memorial concert to celebrate Ian's life and work. We are thrilled
that so many of Ian's friends and former pupils will be participating in this
unique event, I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing at Her Majesty's Theatre, Haymarket,
London on Sunday 24 February 2008 at 7.30pm. All proceeds will be donated to the
newly created Ian Adam "Singing for Breathing" Fund.
Royal
Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust is a national and international referral centre
for adults and children with heart and lung conditions. The Trust is a world leader
in clinical care and research, and is based on two sites at Chelsea and Harefield.
The
Royal Brompton & Harefield Charitable Fund is a registered charity providing
extra income for innovative research, specialist medical equipment and facilities
for the benefit of patients with heart and lung disease. Supported by the Charitable
Fund, the Trust's arts programme (rb&hArts) brings all aspects of the arts
- particularly visual art and music - to our staff, patients and their relatives.
The rb&hArts programme includes exhibitions, site-specific commissions, residencies,
workshops, and one of the most active hospital-based live music programmes in
the country.
The Ian Adam
"Singing for Breathing" Fund will allow rb&hArts to
·
incorporate singing training into the physiotherapy and pulmonary rehabilitation
programmes we offer to individuals with long-term respiratory problems
·
research the impact of singing on breathlessness in conditions such as asthma,
chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) and emphysema and disseminate these results
to other hospitals
Many
individuals with respiratory disease lose confidence in their ability to live
a 'normal' life, and become isolated and demoralised by their condition. Through
singing we hope to
· Provide an enjoyable, sociable way to undertake
vital exercise
· Improve recovery time from exercise
· Increase
confidence by giving back a sense of control over breathing
· Alert
healthcare institutions and the general public to the enormous benefits of singing
We
believe we can have a huge impact on the health and happiness of people suffering
from conditions like chronic asthma, emphysema, cystic fibrosis, and many others,
and hope that in doing so we will provide a fitting legacy to Ian Adam's life's
work and heartfelt belief in the joy that singing can bring to everyone.
We
hope you will support us by buying a ticket to this wonderful concert but if you
are unable to attend, donations are very welcome. Please contact fundraising@rbht.nhs.uk
